The other week, I wrote an essay called The Radical Act of Enjoying Your Life.
My dad (who has been taking guitar lessons this year) sent me an audio recording the next day of a song he wrote inspired by my post. I listened to the song and it occurred to me that there was no better use of my animation skills than to turn his song into a music video. So I paused my other projects and made this instead.
His guitar teacher, Jonathan Bilenki contributed the drums and bass and really gets the credit for inspiring this whole project in the first place.
I had a lot of fun returning to this hand drawn style – it’s been a while since I’ve made anything with human characters and scene based illustrations and frame by frame loops. It was both meditative and tedious in a nostalgic kind of way. My favorite part of the process was inventing the details in this piece (the painting at 0:40, the new item he cooks at 1:18, the phone content at 1:28).
I love that this video is a product of its message – a reminder to use your mind and your skills and your imagination for the people around you to enjoy. What else is it all for?
Yours,
Tala
